Welcome to the Kirrawee Brick Pit campaign website

Introduction

The Kirrawee Brick Pit is located North of the main Kirrawee Shopping Village. The size of the site is approx. 4.5ha with the deep brick pit covering approximately 50-60% of the total site. The pit itself is half filled with water, making it a natural lagoon.

During recent years, the site has been subject of much controversy. Back in 2001, a 20 month program commenced to consult with the community about the future use of the site. The program was a joint initiative between the local council, the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources (DIPNR), Sydney Water – the then owner of the site and the local community. At the time, the Local Environment Plan (LEP) produced a master plan for the Kirrawee Shopping Village and brick pit which involved rezoning the site to a mix of commercial, residential and 20% open public space.

In April 2005, after the election of a new councillor, 45 ammendments were passed (many with regards to the people’s LEP) which basically dismantled the previous work conducted by the Living Centres program back in 2001. The amendments changed the zoning to “employment” along the Princes Highway frontage, with the remainder being zoned as “special uses”, noting specifically that “..educational establishments are a permissible use in both zones”.

This website has been established to further inform residents and business owners with details of the Local Area Masterplan (LAM) and summary of the Draft Amendment No. 3 that were the intentions of the Council after extensive public consultation.  All the petition registrations collected on this site will be collated and sent to the Sutherland Shire Council prior to the 22nd May, 2008.  You can also lodge your concerns at most retail stores at Gymea, Sutherland and Kirrawee shopping centres.
